SEDATION DENTISTRY

IV & oral conscious sedation dentist

Dr. V. Brian Gagliardi Canandaigua Dental Health

Don’t brush off the dentist. Sedation dentistry is a safe, viable alternative for patients who fear needles, have sensitive teeth, need complex work or just dread dental procedures. Since patient comfort is our biggest concern, we offer conscious sedation dentistry, including IV and oral sedation and nitrous oxide, so you can feel calm and relaxed in the dental chair while we work on giving you a healthy, beautiful smile.

What is Conscious Sedation?

Some people refer to conscious sedation as sleep dentistry. However, you are really not asleep during the procedure. In fact, you will remain conscious during your entire procedure. You will also be able to understand and respond to the dentist. Conscious sedation actually induces a state of anxiety-free, deep relaxation.

The type of sedation to be used will be up to you and Dr. Gagliardi and depends on the treatment needed, your medical history and your level of anxiety and comfort.

About IV Sedation

IV sedation works much like oral conscious sedation except that the drugs are administered intravenously (in your vein). With IV sedation, the effects and recovery are felt much quicker than with oral sedation.

IV sedation is safe and effective and is often the method of choice if you don't want to be aware of the procedure or for those who fear dental injections, noises or smells. In fact, most people may feel like they were "asleep" during the procedure because IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation. The drugs used in IV sedation can also produce memory loss for the period of time they were administered. Time will seem to pass by quickly and you will not recall much after the procedure.

The main advantage of IV sedation is that the drug dosage and level of sedation is adjusted to your needs. IV sedation is highly effective and reliable. It is important to remember that on the day of the appointment you will need someone to bring you to our office, take you home and stay with you until you have completely recovered.

Dr. Gagliardi is a certified conscious sedation dentist and is a member of Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS). If you are nervous about dental care procedures, talk to us. We can help alleviate the discomfort and fear that are often barriers to better oral health.
